Spider-Man: A Brand New Day with the most beautiful sunrise




When Spiderman: Brand New Day ended, the entire theatre erupted in applause. This is everything one needs to know if they’re skeptical of watching the movie. 

Brand New Day is arguably Tom Holland’s best Spiderman movie. This one feels like a movie that revolves around Spiderman and his struggles and nothing else. It is not used as a stepping stone for any other Marvel project. It is rightfully treated as a solo Spiderman movie, and that is where its biggest strength lies. 

It is a proper emotional roller coaster. This one’s dedicated to Spiderman fans, who have watched each installment as passionately as the previous one. This is a superhero movie which is very human and written with a lot of heart. Director Destin Cretton was given the task to navigate the character arc of a man who has lost his closest friends and loved ones. He beautifully stood up to the task and navigates Peter’s journey with the emotional sensitivity it deserves. Peter’s character arc is heart breaking, teaches a lot of lessons, and is the driving force behind the movie. Cretton must get his flowers.

The third act is the best part of the movie. Ditching the “big action set-piece to conclude the movie” template personally works for me. What follows is an emotionally resonant climax that will stay with me for quite some time. 

Tom Holland flourishes in this movie. The chemistry he shares with Jon Bernthal is the soul of the movie. Bernthal wasn’t cast just for cash grab purposes. He meaningfully adds to the movie. The Spiderman-Punisher duo is a delight to watch, particularly during the action sequences, with some humorous moments sprinkled along the way which made the entire theatre laugh. The gags of this movie genuinely work. Zendaya (as MJ) and Jacob Batalon (as Ned) make the best of whatever screen time they have. Sadie Sink is absolutely brilliant. She has acted her heart out. The soundtrack blends well with the movie and bears contextual significance to it. 

An area this movie stands out in is its swing sequences. Cretton has done a substantially better job than his predecessors in going about this aspect. The sequences are stunning and immersive, making the movie a visual treat.

Apart from the third act, the main highlight is the action. The action sequences are absolutely stunning, in particular the prison scene and the Hulk scene, live up to the hype. They are fast paced and thrilling. Cretton knows exactly when to use slow motion shots, which greatly enhance the scenes. The VFX is wonderfully done. The camera work in the Hulk scene is excellent.

My only issue is that a majority of the key moments were mostly revealed in the trailers. The storyline is also quite simplistic, don’t go in expecting any major surprises. However, this doesn’t take away the fact that this was one of the most memorable cinema experiences as a Spiderman enthusiast. Do give this movie a watch. You’ll laugh, cry, cheer and have a wonderful time. It is indeed a brand new day with the most beautiful sunrise.

Dunki: Unsatisfactorily Excellent

When one has a stellar film resumé comprising of  Sanju, PK,  and  3 Idiots,  the audience expects excellence of the same standard whenever they walk into theatres to watch a movie directed by that particular director. With Dunki being Rajkumar Hirani’s much-awaited collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, the expectations were set sky-high, and the movie is a curious case for deciding whether the expectations were met or not.    In short, the film centers around a group of five friends who aspire to go to London in a bid to earn money and acquire a wealthy lifestyle to come out of the clutches of poverty and financial despair.    The film’s initial half, which is focused on primarily being comical, turns out to be quite hit or miss. Merry Christmas: A Gift Best Kept Unwrapped

Merry Christmas  seemed to hold a lot of promise for a Sriram Raghavan movie, but it errs in a variety of compartments making for a below par film. One of the flaws was casting Katrina Kaif. Her limited range of emotions and sombre dialogue delivery do little to enhance the screenplay. On the other hand, Vijay Sethupathi is the polar opposite, bringing his A-game in terms of acting. He effectively nails the dialogues, despite hindi not being his mother tongue, which makes it all the more impressive.    Merry Christmas  devotes almost the entirety of its first half in building up a tense atmosphere, one of the rare components in which the movie succeeds. Although slow-paced, the initial half has an air of mystery surrounding it, keeping viewers intrigued with the hope that it all culminates later.
